Overview:

The Adler Planetarium Galaxy Package includes General Admission, One Theatre presentation, and Historic Atwood Sphere or Guided Tour.

Historic Atwood Sphere
Atwood Sphere, Chicago's oldest planetarium, was constructed in 1913. The sphere is 15 feet in diameter with 692 holes drilled through its metal surface, allowing light to enter and show the positions of the brightest stars in the night sky. Experience the night sky over Chicago as it appeared in 1913. Although the star positions have not changed since then, we can see only a small percentage of these stars in our current night sky due to light pollution. Enter the Atwood Sphere to be guided through an audio experience identifying stars and the constellations they form.

Guided Tour
Join in for an introductory tour and learn about the history and collections of the planetarium. You'll get an overview of the museum's galleries and be well prepared to plan your visit.

The Adler Planetarium
America's First Planetarium was founded in 1930 by Chicago business leader Max Adler. The museum is home to two full-size planetarium theaters, including the world's first all-digital projection Definiti Space Theater and one of the world's most important antique instrument collections. The Adler is a recognized leader in science education, with a focus on inspiring young people, particularly women and minorities, to pursue careers in science.

The Doane Observatory
Home to the largest aperture telescope available to the public in the Chicagoland area. As such, it is the centerpiece of all telescope observing experiences at the Adler. The Doane can gather over 5000 times more light than an unaided human eye, allowing visitors to see with their own eyes celestial objects like the Moon, planets, stars, and galaxies that are trillions of miles away. Open to Adler's visitors for viewing every Far Out Friday and for special observing events such as eclipses, planetary alignments, and comet watches.

Explore the Universe at America's First Planetarium - the only museum in the world with two full-size planetarium theaters. All Show times are subject to change.

The DEFINITI SPACE THEATER provides an exciting experience in a virtual reality environment that launches you into the outer reaches of space. Shows offered:

Cosmic Collisions - Closing May, 2010
Narrated by award-winning actor, director, and producer Robert Redford, Cosmic Collisions launches visitors on an awe-inspiring trip through space and time-well beyond the calm face of the night sky-to explore the hypersonic impacts that drive the continuing evolution of the Universe.

This new space show focuses on the full range of collisions, from catastrophic planetary impacts and the merging of massive galaxies to the continual explosions occurring in the center of the Sun and the incessant barrage of small ionized particles in the solar wind ricocheting off Earth's magnetic field creating other-worldly conditions called "space weather."

Journey to the Stars - Opening May 21, 2010
Journey to the Stars, narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg, launches visitors through space and time to experience the life and death of the stars in our night sky, including our own nurturing Sun. Tour familiar stellar formations, explore new celestial mysteries, and discover the fascinating, unfolding story that connects us all to the stars.

One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure
This is an original planetarium show based on the popular children's show Sesame Street. Big Bird, Elmo and their friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu, take viewers on a journey of discovery to learn about the Big Dipper, the North Star, the Sun and the Moon.

The UNIVERSE THEATER

3D Universe
A Symphony This compelling video suite blends breathtakingly beautiful astronomical images with the enchanting musical selection 'Pictures at an Exhibition' composed by Mussorgsky in 1874. In creating this unique sensory experience, Adler Astronomer and artist Dr. Jose Francisco Salgado selected spectacular pictures from observatories around the world, the Hubble Space Telescope, and other NASA and European Space Agency spacecraft. He combined these images with animations produced by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Adler Planetarium. This is the first time many of these 3-D images have been seen by the public.

3D Vision: Imaging the Universe
3-D is more than just a gimmick used for entertainment purposes- scientists use some of the same 3-D techniques found in movies, along with other technologies, to explore the Universe in ways that were not possible before. 3-D Vision: Imaging the Universe examines some of these state-of-the-art scientific visualizations - from close up on the surface of Mars, to the Big Bang, to the formation of galaxies with hundreds of billions of stars.

The SKY THEATER experience is an exploration of the wonders of the clear night sky projected on the dome of Adler's historic Zeiss planetarium theater.

Skywatchers of Africa
Since the beginning of time, the people of Africa have used their knowledge of the sky to meet their physical needs for survival, build their societies and shape their spiritual lives. Skywatchers of Africa is a fascinating exploration of Africa and the cultural uses of the sky that developed over thousands of years. The show highlights the diversity of African cultural astronomy and celebrates our shared human experience.

Please NOTE: The first show of the day may be replaced with Discover Our Universe show in order to accommodate school groups.

Night Sky Live!
Take an in-depth journey through the cosmos with Night Sky Live!, presented in the historic Sky Theater. With the help of modern exploration and observing techniques, this brand new show gives the audience a deeper look at the sometimes strange, and often breathtakingly beautiful, diversity of objects that make up our universe. Night Sky Live! is an original live sky show created by the Adler Planetarium to reflect our ever-changing understanding of the cosmos.

The first show of the day may be replaced with Discover Our Universe show in order to accommodate school groups.
