On January 9, 1861, Citadel cadets
fired the first shots of the American Civil War when they opened fire
on a Union ship entering Charleston's harbor. Three months later,
on April 12, 1861, shore batteries under the command of General Pierre
G. T. Beauregard opened fire on the Union-held Fort Sumter in
Charleston harbor. After a 34-hour bombardment, Major Robert Anderson
surrendered the fort. The American Civil War had begun.

From the Ordinance of Secession (1860), to the first shots fired on
Fort Sumter, to the surrender of the city, guests will be told the
story of how Charleston fought, survived and rebuilt during one of
America's greatest wars.
You will hear what daily life was like living in a city under siege -
the second longest siege in modern history. During your tour, you will
visit the High Battery and White Point Gardens where weapons of war
encircle the park.
Remember the movie, Glory? Your tour guide will discuss this true
account of one of the first black regiments - the 54th Massachusetts -
and their attack on Battery Wagner in 1863. During your tour, guests
are invited to view a collection of historic photographs from the
period that will enrich your experience and fill your mind's eye with
images of the devastation incurred.
