JEPSON CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Visitors come to Savannah for history, architecture and, increasingly, for art. And now the new Jepson Center for the Arts joins the Telfair's two National Historic Landmark buildings, the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Owens-Thomas House, to present a historical, architectural and artistic experience simply unavailable anywhere else.
Designed by the noted architect Moshe Safdie, the Jepson Center is
both a work of monumental sculpture and a state-of-the-art museum
building. From its stately location near the 185-year-old Telfair
Academy on historic Telfair Square, the Jepson Center welcomes
visitors of all ages.
One of the Jepson Center's most exciting features is ArtZeum, the only
Savannah historic district destination created especially for children
and their families. ArtZeum is an inspiring place for the entire
family to experience art and architecture at interactive, hands-on
exhibits, many incorporating actual works from the Telfair's
collection.
With its towering glass house, magnetic sculpture wall, public art
obelisk, and a dozen more fun-filled exhibits, ArtZeum challenges
visitors to explore "big ideas" about art.
- Have you ever wondered what art
really is?
- Why do people make art?
- How do you look at art?
- Why is art important?
- What does art means to you?
ArtZeum combines surprising and
enjoyable experiences, art making, real works of art from the museum's
collection, and opportunities for critical thinking to encourage young
people-and their parents-to challenge their ideas and explore art's
place in our world.
ArtZeum activities include:
- A walk-through work of art: a
glass house
- Magnetic sculpture wall
- Towering public art obelisk
- "Artists speak" video station
- Architectural building blocks
- "What is art?" voting game
- Dress up area
- and more!
Explore, experience and enjoy art and
architecture from a different perspective at ArtZeum in the Telfair
Museum of Art's dramatic new Jepson Center for the Arts.
The Jepson Center for the Arts also features two large galleries for
major traveling exhibitions, galleries for African American art,
Southern art, photography and works-on-paper. No visit to Savannah is
complete without experiencing the Telfair's new Jepson Center for the
Arts.
