Overview:

Charleston's Slave PortDuring the antebellum period, Charleston served as a center of commercial activity for the South's plantation economy, which depended heavily upon slaves as a source of labor.

From the earliest slave traders to the modern Civil Rights Movement, you will uncover truths and dispel myths about the African-American experience in Charleston on this well-researched and informative tour.

During your tour, you will visit the Old Slave Mart. Located on one of Charleston's few remaining cobblestone streets, the Old Slave Mart is the only known existing building used as a slave auction gallery in South Carolina.

Your professional guide will discuss the numerous slave revolts that occurred throughout the South and will discuss such figures as Nat Turner and Denmark Vesey.

Other topics include slave life on the plantation, slave trading and its proprietors, Reconstruction and the Jim Crow Laws that were in force between 1876 and 1964. Such laws were enacted in the Southern and border states that required racial segregation in all public facilities.

The Slavery and Freedom tour tells Charleston's African-American story like no one else. This is a leisurely walk with numerous stops for discussion, questions, and photographs.
