The Florida Aquarium's mission is to
entertain, educate and inspire stewardship about the natural environment.
It serves as a significant example of Florida's commitment to
preserving native landscapes, ecosystems, historical and archaeological
sites, and ethnic and cultural traditions representative of the diverse
geography and cultural life unique to the state. Since it's opening in
March 1995, the Aquarium has provided cultural enrichment experiences to
more than seven million visitors, including 100,000 school students and
teachers annually.
The Florida Aquarium's focus is on the aquatic habitats and ecosystems of
Florida, as well as the diversity of the state's aquatic life, all of
which are displayed with uniqueness and creativity in main galleries,
exhibits and activities throughout the facility. Begin your journey in
Wetlands with free-flighted birds, alligators and river otters and
discover more than 20,000 aquatic plants and animals.
In Bays and Beaches discover the wonderful world of aquatic animals that
live as our neighbors in Tampa Bay and along our shores. Immerse yourself
in interactive programs like 'Swim With The Fishes' and 'Dive With The
Sharks', get up close and personal with African Black-footed penguins in
the 'no borders, no barriers' Penguin Promenade and a close encounter with
the deep ocean's, top five species of sharks from around the world,
including the intimidating Sand Tiger shark. Then go just a little further
to find the lion fish, moral eels and octopus.
See beautiful exotic fish, play fish games, watch vintage films about pet
fish, meet some real 'aquariumaniacs' and discover the history, art,
science and fun of keeping pet fish at home. The Coral Reef Gallery
"Dragons Down Under" features both leafy and weedy sea dragons. Take a
walkabout through this Australian-themed exhibit and learn the stories of
sea dragons and their kin.
The Caribbean themed family friendly outdoor
exhibit, with the Explore a Shore, 2.2 acre aquatic discovery zone for
kids, makes the perfect stop during an Aquarium visit. Explore the
Aquarium as never before. See previous "off-limits" areas and learn what
it takes to make the Aquarium work. Dive with the Sharks provides a unique
opportunity for certified SCUBA divers, age 15 and older, to come
face-to-face with live sharks. Take a photo tour of the Wild Dolphin
Ecotours, a Shark Feeding Behind the Scenes tour and Swim with the Fishes.
