Gettysburg

Gettysburg is a National Military Park located in Pennsylvania. As the site of the largest land battle ever fought on the country, and one of the most relevant battles of the Civil War, it is an incredibly important and historic location. Gettysburg itself is a flat meadow allowing you to see miles in the distance, surrounded by rocky hills and the Blue Ridge Mountains visible far off in the distance. While the park itself is the main attraction, there are several fascinating landmarks and museums within Gettysburg that should be seen as well.

Because the park is quite sprawling, it is certainly best to see the many sites in a car or tour bus, as it can be exhausting to walk or even cycle between the destinations. Perhaps one of the best aspects of visiting Gettysburg is that the names learned in your history textbooks truly come alive. Rather than just read about sites like Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and Pickett's Charge, you will get to experience then for yourself, and imagine the epic battles that took place before your very eyes.

The Jennie Wade House is one of the historical landmarks that should not be missed in Gettysburg. Jennie Wade was the only town citizen who was killed in the battle, at the young age of 20. Her family home is completely unchanged, creating a historical home that lets you see how citizens of the area lived in that time period. It is a fascinating look at the past, and a glimpse of how war affects even civilians.

For a complete understanding of the Civil War, head to the Civil War Museum. Begin by better understanding the causes of the war, and the factors that contributed to the separation of the Northern and Southern states. Follow up with a trip into the Battleroom Auditorium, which gives visitors a chance to experience in life size what the Civil War was truly like. End with the the Gettysburg Address, delivered by an animated Abraham Lincoln.

A final destination in Gettysburg that all visitors should visit is the Hall of Presidents. This museum is a great way to see each of the nation's past leaders, and hear some of their speeches. Putting a face to a name is a wonderful educational tool as well. See the typical clothing styles of each era, with sample outfits of both the presidents and the former first ladies.

There is certainly more than just history in Gettysburg. You'll also find interesting art galleries, friendly local vendors selling produce, and world class movie theaters showing your favorite films alongside historical documentaries. End a day of touring with a hearty meal at one of the local restaurants, and a relaxing drink at one of the historic pubs.
