Salem
Salem is a beautiful and historic town found in Massachusetts, New England. The entire town is a historical landmark, filled with fascinating sites and interesting architecture. From the exciting museums to the eerie ""Haunted Happenings"" each October, there is truly something for everyone in this fantastic destination just a short trip from Boston.
Many visitors are drawn to Salem for its impressive architectural offerings. Since the colony was full of wealthy settlers in the late 18th century, you can find amazing buildings in many styles, including Victorian, Georgian, Greek Revival and post-medieval. A day in Salem tour can point out these historic buildings to you, and explain a little about their styles as you pass.
Of course, Salem may be best known for the famed Salem Witch Trials of the late 17th century. There is plenty within the town to remind you of these infamous trials, including the Salem Witch Museum, which provides a history of the trials as well as information about witchcraft in American through the years. The Witch Dungeon Museum of Salem is equally spooky and entertaining, and you will certainly learn more about the town's history. There are women in Salem today who claim to be witches, and can read your fortune if you choose. In the month of October, the whole town gets in a bewitching mood for ""Haunted Happenings"" which consists of several events in Salem, from witch expos to ghost tours.
If you want something less scary but equally riveting, learn more about Salem's pirating history. As a city located on the water, the early settlers dealt with pirates on a regular basis. Today, you can discover new things about them at the New England Pirate's Museum. Get to know recreated characters like Blackbeard, and see the docks where pirates came to town to buy supplies and recruit townspeople to join their pirate crew. This is a really exciting way to bring history to life!
After a tour of all these exciting museums and historical landmarks, Salem also offers plenty of welcome opportunities to unwind and relax. Welcoming accommodations, great local shops, and delicious dining are all a part of the Salem visitor's experience.
