The South Carolina Aquarium is a world leader in conservation, both aquatic and environmental. It opened in May of 2000 in the historic Charleston Harbor. As of August 2005, over 3 million people have visited the South Carolina Aquarium.

The Aquarium is a regional resource inspiring conservation by excelling in education; and in the care, display and study of aquatic life. This is communicated thru 60 fun and fascinating displays and interactive exhibitions. The South Carolina Aquarium is presently home to over 10,000 plants and animals, like: rattlesnakes, great blue herons, hawks, owls, sharks, dolphins, turtles and many other forms of Life.

The exhibits located throughout the Aquarium focus on five major regions of South Carolina: the Watershed, the Mountains, the Piedmont, the Coastal Plain and the Ocean. The changing exhibit space currently showcases the Secrets of the Amazon, displaying a variety of plants, animals and habitats from the Amazon River basin.

The Great Ocean Tank is the largest exhibit in the Aquarium. It extends from the first to the third floor of the Aquarium, holds over 385,000 gallons of water and contains over 300 marine animals including river otters, loggerhead sea turtles, alligators, sea horses, jellyfish, pufferfish, moray eels, horseshoe crabs, starfish, sea dragons and sharks. Some are rare and exotic.
